Mulberry silk bonnet: the night-time hair protection experts recommend

You can't feel it, but while you sleep your hair is put through hundreds of micro-frictions against your pillowcase. Every movement damages the hair cuticle and, after 8 hours, the result adds up: hair breakage, frizz when you wake up, loss ofmoisture. The mulberry silk bonnet puts an end to this friction from the very first night.

And no, not all materials are created equal. Grade 6A mulberry silk is the only fibre smooth enough to offer no resistance to the hair: its ultra-smooth surface, made of continuous threads 1,000 to 1,300 metres long, lets every strand glide. As for polyester satin bonnets, they imitate the sheen of silk without having any of its biological properties.

Mulberry silk bonnet compared with a polyester satin bonnet

Sleep bonnet

Silk or satin: the costly mix-up

You have probably come across “satin” bonnets for a few euros. The catch: satin is not a material, it is a type of weave. A “satin” bonnet may well be made of 100% synthetic polyester, and at that point everything you were looking for disappears. We have in fact compared 11 silk bonnets on the market to get a clear picture.

Satin is a weave, not a fibre

Satin can be woven from polyester, viscose or mulberry silk. The shiny look is the same, but the fibre is entirely different. Always look at the material, never the weave. That is exactly what separates silk from satin.

What mulberry silk really contains

18 natural amino acids, including sericin, a moisturising protein that interacts positively with the keratin in your hair. It is this composition that makes the difference to your lengths, night after night, and it is also what sets mulberry silk apart from other silks.

What polyester does, by contrast

It generatesstatic electricity, harbours bacteria and dries out your lengths. The shine is there; the protective effect is not. The silk, polyester satin and cotton comparison details every difference.

For a real protective effect, only one statement on the label matters: 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk (we explain how to read a silk quality label). That is the fabric we use for our mulberry silk bonnet, which is OEKO-TEX® certified.

Expert opinion

What hair specialists say

Hairdressers and trichologists specialising in curly, coily and textured hair.

★★★★★
“The mulberry silk bonnet, that's the first investment to make in your hair. Before treatments, before masks, before serums.”

The reason is simple: no treatment can make up for 8 hours of night-time friction, repeated every night. Removing the cause will always do more than treating the symptoms. That is the whole point of sleeping in a silk bonnet.

Our mulberry silk bonnet is made from 100% Grade 6A silk and is OEKO-TEX® certified.

Why satin is not a material: we explain it in silk or satin. Our mulberry silk bonnet is made from 100% OEKO-TEX® certified Grade 6A silk.

Silk bonnet

Silk bonnet for curly, coily and textured hair

All curly hair (2C à 3C), coily hair (4A to 4C) and textured hair have a hair cuticle that is more open, which makes them more sensitive to friction, to loss ofmoisture and to mechanical breakage. Hence the place of the silk bonnet among trichologists and the community around Curly Girl, and why silk changes everything for curly hair.

  • Curls

Your spirals keep their definition when you wake up, without getting flattened. Zero manipulation in the morning.

  • Moisture

The mulberry silk is hydrophobic: it does not drink up your moisture, whereas cotton absorbs up to 30% of it.

  • Breakage

Up to 50% less hair breakage than with a cotton bonnet.

  • Hairstyle

Blow-dry, keratin straightening, twist-out: your style holds all night.

  • Colour

On coloured or bleached hair, the weakened cuticle is protected: the colour lasts longer.

  • Nights

Worn properly, it stays in place: how to tuck your hair into it.

Our mulberry silk bonnet is made from 100% Grade 6A silk, certified OEKO-TEX®, and also comes in a long hair version. Still undecided? We compare the silk pillowcase and the sleep bonnet.

Silk bonnet

The silk bonnet is especially for you if…

Let's be clear: the mulberry silk bonnet does every hair type good. But for some profiles, the difference is not even up for debate.

You have long hair

The longer your lengths, the larger the surface exposed to friction becomes. There is a version designed for them.

Your hair is fine or fragile

A hair cuticle that is thin struggles to cope with eight hours of rubbing, night after night.

Your hair is undergoing treatment

Keratin, relaxing, colouring: a treated cuticle calls for mechanical protection.

You wear extensions

The attachment points are protected from the friction that makes them come loose faster.

You are going through alopecia or alopecia areata

The mulberry silk is naturally hypoallergenic and does not stimulate scalp inflammation. We cover it in detail here.
