At night, your hair rubs against the cotton of your pillowcase, which absorbs moisture and snags the fibre. The bonnet creates a smooth surface around your hair: less friction, less breakage, and a style that lasts longer after you wake up.
The edge is elasticated and lined, so it holds snugly without marking your forehead. With very voluminous hair, tuck your lengths inside before putting it on: it's the weight of loose hair that makes a bonnet fall off, not the elastic.
Yes, from fine, straight hair to 4C coily hair. Curly and wavy hair gains definition, coily hair gains moisture, and long hair sees less breakage at the ends. Short hair benefits most from the zero-frizz effect in the morning.
Satin is a weave, not a material: most satin bonnets are made of polyester. It glides, but it doesn't breathe and makes your scalp sweat. Mulberry silk is a natural, thermoregulating fibre that absorbs very little moisture from your hair and your treatments.
Momme measures the density of silk. For a bonnet, 19 momme is the right balance: dense enough to be opaque and durable, supple enough to stay light on your head all night. Above that, you gain thickness without gaining comfort.
On damp hair yes, on soaking wet hair no: the water stays trapped and your scalp doesn't dry. With a mask or an oil, let the treatment sink in for a few minutes, then put the bonnet on, and wash it more often.
By hand, in cold water, with a gentle detergent free from enzymes and bleaching agents. Press without wringing, and dry flat away from any heat source. In the machine, use a laundry bag and a delicate programme at 30°C maximum. No tumble dryer, no fabric softener.
Several years with hand washing. If you wear it every night, allow for one wash a week, and ideally have a second bonnet so the first can dry completely.
